John graduated from St. Paul’s High School in Garden City (1986). He received a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Philosophy and a degree in law from The Catholic University of America (1990, 1995). While in law school he received the American Jurisprudence award in Family Law.

He is an active member of the legal community. In the past, he was an officer of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association. Additionally, he has served at the Women’s Bar of the State of New York where he has co-chaired the Equal Access in the Profession Committee and served two years as co-chair of the statewide Diversity Committee. 

John has held numerous volunteer positions including: the co-chair of the Poly Prep Country Day School Lower School Parent Association (2019-2021); the co-chair for Big Night Out Gala at Saratoga Independent School; an assistant coach for Saratoga Wilton Flag Football League (2024 -2025); and is a board member at the Saratoga Wilton Soccer Club (2026-).

He is currently pursuing his PhD in Literature at SUNY Binghamton. He received an MA from the same university in 2024. His concentration is Contemporary American Fiction with a focus on novels written by women from 1960 to the present. Research interests include the novel of manners in its historic, contemporary, and detective form. He has taught at Hartwick College and Siena University.

When not practicing law, attending school, or volunteering John can usually be found reading novels, holding a camera, or exercising. He is also known to shout at the television during the news and sporting events.

The Law Office of John Coffey (Formerly Coffey & Coffey) was founded in 1998. It is a boutique firm specializing in residential real estate matters and personal injury law on both the defense and plaintiff’s side. Prior clients include the New York City Transit Authority and the City of New York.
